Beanie

BEANIE is a neutered male, domestic short-haired, orange tabby that is about 5 years old and declawed on all four paws.  He is a very friendly and gentle boy that loves as much attention as he can get.  He doesn’t play with toys very much and would be considered a medium energy cat.  He would rather have lots of human contact and would therefore make a wonderful addition to any family.  Beanie is good with other cats and great with all the children we have seen pet him or carry him around.  He has not yet been tested with dogs.  If you are looking for a great lap cat that would be tolerant of kind attention from children,  Beanie is the cat you’ve been looking for.  Please stop in to meet him or call the Green County Humane Society at 608-325-9600 Upcoming events:

Rescue Bowl is Saturday
By DAN MOELLER

In emergencies, police and fire personnel join together to help those in trouble. In a few weeks they will meet in friendly combat on the football field to benefit a good cause.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, local firefighters and law enforcement officers will hold the Rescue Bowl flag football game. Gates open at 1 p.m. and kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. at the Brodhead High School football field. Donations at the door are $3 per person while those under age 5 will be admitted free.

The event benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for research. Brodhead police dispatcher Rena Welty was the person who suggested the event. Her four-year old son Nicholas has cystic fibrosis. In an interview last week, she said the Brodhead Police Department wanted to host a flag football game to raise money for charity, so benefiting cystic fibrosis was a natural idea.

Participants will come from the Brodhead Police Department, Brodhead Fire Department, Monroe Police and Fire Departments, New Glarus Police Department, Albany Police Department, and the Orangeville, Ill, Fire Department, she said.

There will be two teams, with the police departments on one and the fire departments on the other.

As part of the fun, there will be a “Kiss the Pig” contest at halftime. Jars will be linked up with the names of numerous local officials and whoever has the most money in their jar at the two minute point at halftime will have to kiss the pig. There is a pig donated for the event and the owner is teaching the pig to kiss, said Welty. “It’s going to be a good time,” she said. “The guys are really excited about it.” The event will be a little friendly competition between law enforcement and fire personnel. Welty might know the feeling. Her husband Eric is a police officer in Monroe. Having a fundraiser also isn’t new for Welty. Her family hosts the Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk in Monroe on the third weekend in May.

They also are involved in smaller events like the upcoming football game. In addition to the game, however, there will be all sorts of crafts for sale and there will be door prizes at the event. “All the area businesses have donated different prizes. The girls here (at the police department) are putting together a concession stand so there will be food and drinks available that day, all kinds of good stuff going on.”

The goal when they started was $2,000. They have almost $1,000 in donations already from local businesses. If people would like to donate, they should make checks available to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and take them to the police station.

Brodhead Police Chief Tom Moczynski says the event is a great opportunity and a fun way to raise money “for an extremely good cause. This is a really good way for people to come out and have a good time for the money they’re donating.”

It will be a chance, he said, for local law enforcement personnel and local firefighters to “square off in an interesting football game.”

Train show to honor Bob Dorr
By DAN MOELLER

An annual model train show held in Monroe is being dedicated to the late Bob Dorr of Brodhead. The Green County Model Railroaders are dedicating their 31st annual model train and swap meet this Saturday and Sunday to Dorr’s memory, reports Paul Schoenike of Monroe. Schoenike is chairman of the event. Dorr died July 9 at the age of 67. “He was a member (of the club) for a long, long time,” said Schoenike.

“Bob Dorr was very much a train aficionado. He knew Union Pacific and his home layout was basically all Union Pacific power.” While the cars may have been from other railroads, all the locomotives were from the Union Pacific.

“Bob had a lot of trains and cars,” said Schoenike. “Oh boy, his display at the show would be different sizes of locomotives. He would sit and tell you about them. He loved to talk to you about some of those power units and he displayed them very well.”

The show is being dedicated to Dorr in recognition of what he meant to the club. As people come in the door there will be a pencil and line drawing of Bob in his railroad garb that was done by a local artist in Monroe. There will also be a display of some of his railroad memorabilia, not just trains but other items as well.

Before retiring, Dorr worked at the Brodhead Post Office, noted Schoenike, and seemed to know everybody in Brodhead. He was admired for battling an long-time illness. “Bob was on kidney dialysis for a good number of years and that isn’t fun. That isn’t fun at all,” said Schoenike.

The train show is being held at the State Line Ice & Community Expo, ?1632 4th Ave West ?Monroe. SLICE is the hockey arena on the southwest side of Monroe. Slice is right across from Badger State ethanol plant in Monroe.

The show originally began in vacant stores in a Monroe mall and then moved to Monroe Junior High School. It has been at its current location for about a half dozen years. All different types of trains will be featured, with about 15 different units. About half the floor space will be taken up by people selling new train items or ones that they have fixed up.

Typically, said Schoenike, about 1,000 people attend. Admission is $4 for adults. Children 10 and under are free if accompanied by an adult.
