Players recognized at football banquet
By BOBBY FEIBEL AND DAN MOELLER

Bobby Feibel photo Athletic director and head coach Jim Matthys spoke at the Football banquet Mon., Nov. 23 in the auditeria at Brodhead High School. Coach Dave Knuth, standing directly behind Matthys at the podium, also spoke and helped hand out awards to the players.

Coaches, players, and parents gathered in the auditeria at Brodhead High School Monday, Nov. 23 to celebrate the 2009 football season with a banquet and awards ceremony for the Brodhead-Juda Cardinals. The junior varsity team went undefeated for the season, while the varsity squad posted a fine 9 and 3 record. A potluck dinner served buffet-style preceded the 7 p.m. awards ceremony, which was officiated by the coaching staff.

Athletic director and head football coach Jim Matthys thanked those involved for their support, beginning his list by acknowledging the hard work of Peggy Olsen, a physical therapist and volunteer who frequents the sidelines of most every game. Olsen is also the current president of the school board. Matthys thanked coaches who had gone the extra mile and athletes who sacrificed for the team.

“I know I’m missing people I wanted to thank,” Matthys told the assemblage, having completed a long list.

“I appreciate all the help we get from the parents as well as the community,” he said.

Coach Dave Knuth addressed those in attendance with the same enthusiasm he commonly displays on the sidelines.

“The boys are committed to what they’re doing,” he said. “They learned to play well as a team, and the junior varsity squad did it while seldom getting the chance to play together. We put them in there, and let them figure it out. They really pulled together,” Knuth said.

“What made this year successful was the kids. I learned the most I’ve ever learned this season, and I learned it from these kids. We would joke around, but when it was time to work, they were hard workers,” said Coach Matthys after retaking the podium. “If I asked one of them to do something, ten of them would jump up to do it,” he said.

“I had zero problems this year,” Matthys noted. “I’ve been told these kids are becoming positive leaders, and I want to tell you, that means a lot to me,” the head coach added. During the ceremony, athletes were recognized for their participation, for the most improved junior varsity and varsity players, as well as for their accomplishments on the field.

According to statistics provided by coach Matthys, the Cardinals rushed for 3,274 yards and passed for 597 for a total of 3871. The defense limited their opponents to 1016 rushing yards and 1178 passing for a total of 2195.

Quarterback David Earleywine attempted 46 passes and completed 25 for 435 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Travis Hull attempted 42 passes, completing 13 for 158 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Mike Peterson had 11 receptions for 228 yards and three touchdowns. Devon Seitz caught nine for 148 yards and one TD. Ethan Douglas had seven receptions for 68 yards and one TD. Jim Lewis had two receptions for 35 yards. Alex Winters caught three passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. Jake Covert had two receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.

As expected, senior Ethan Douglas paced the ground game with 179 carries for 1,285 yards and 22 touchdowns. He averaged 7.18 yards per carry. Brayden Fritsch carried 68 times for 601 yards, 11 touchdowns and an 8.84 yard per carry average.

Gavin Garrett had 76 carries for 495 yards and five TDs. Devon Seitz carried 20 times for 281 yards and four touchdowns. Jake Covert carried 37 times for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Jesse Delorme had 28 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Blair Chapman carried 10 times for 64 yards and a touchdown. Travis Hull had 19 carries for 12 yards and scored two touchdowns. David Earleywine had three carries for 12 yards. Trent Jordan carried twice for 25 yards. Jeron Harding carried once for three yards. Alex Wallace had one carry for two yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Eric Wahl had 48 assists and 20 solo tackles. Ethan Douglas had 32 assists, 33 solo tackles and seven sacks. Josh Hicks registered 28 assists, 30 solo tackles and five sacks. Brandon Booth had 25 assists, 25 solos and four sacks. Jake Covert had 16 assists, 23 solo stops and one sack. Brodhead girls fall to Monroe in season opener
By CRAIG SAUER

Junior Mariah Mohns protects the ball from the Cheesemakers.

Say this about the Brodhead Cardinals girls basketball team, they made the perennial Badger Conference power Monroe Cheesemakers earn their win Saturday.

The Cardinals (0-1) fell to the Cheesemakers (1-0) 51-41 in non-conference action.

“We played all 32 minutes. That was one of the things we went over in the pre-game,” said Cardinals Head Coach Brad Pickett. “We played hard.”

Monroe never gave up the lead Saturday, but the Cardinals made it interesting late, by going on a 9-2 run to open the fourth quarter to bring the gap to nine.

Monroe won the game on the boards taking full advantage of their tall senior forwards, six-foot Ashley Hermanson and six-foot-two Jamie Armstrong.

“We would cut (the lead) by six or eight and then we would give up a rebound,” Pickett said.

The Cardinals played the Cheesemakers tight through the first quarter, trailing 11-7, but it was in the second quarter that Monroe racked up the lead that they would lean on for the rest of the game. By halftime Brodhead trailed 30-18. The score was 43-25 at the start of the fourth quarter when the Cardinals went on their best offensive run of the night.

Senior forward Dana Lewis led the way for the Cardinals scoring a game-high 15 points. Junior guard Mariah Mohns added 13 points; senior point guard Megan Heller chipped in five points, freshmen Mariah Ahrens and Taylor Douglas had three points a piece; and senior Amanda Johnson contributed two points.

For the Cheesemakers, Armstrong and Hermanson scored 13 and 10 points respectively; senior guard Gwen Sutter also had 10 points. Brodhead was 4-6 from the free throw line Saturday, while Monroe was 11-14.

Playing the Cheesemakers, who have won six straight conference titles and two state championships in that stretch, on the road no less, was a challenging test for the Cardinals season-opener.

Pickett, who is in his first year heading the girls basketball program, said Saturday he was glad to figure out where his team stacked up. “The good part about playing Monroe early is we are able to find out our weaknesses in a hurry. We have got to rebound better and take care of the ball better,” Pickett said.

The Cardinals will play their home opener Friday against East Troy.

Cheesemakers too much for Brodhead boys
By CRAIG SAUER

Junior Nick Jacobson looks to pass the ball against the Cheesemakers.

A close game for the Brodhead boys basketball team unraveled early in the second half Saturday, as the Cardinals (1-1) fell to the Monroe Cheesemakers 45-30 in non-conference action.

A 12-2 scoring run in the third quarter by the Cheesemakers (1-0) broke open a game that was within 3 points at halftime. “They are the better team at this point. We have a lot to work on if we play them again later in the year,” said Cardinals Head Coach Brian Kammerer.

Despite trailing throughout the game the Cardinals had kept the game close throughout the first half. The opening quarter ended with the score 16-9 in favor of the Cheesemakers, but Brodhead virtually put a halt to their opponent’s offense in the second quarter. Monroe failed to hit a field goal in the quarter and was outscored 6-2, which brought the halfway point tally to 18-15 with the Cheesemakers barely on top. The third quarter was a different story. A quick start, turnovers and a hot hand put the Cardinals behind the eight ball for the rest of the game.

Monroe’s junior guard Michael Barrett catapulted his team forward by scoring 10 of his 12 points in the opening moments of the second half, including knocking down two three-pointers during the Cheesemakers 12-2 run.

The Cardinals might have made the game closer had they taken advantage of their free throw opportunities. Brodhead shot just 45 percent from the charity stripe; including hitting just 6-15 in the second half.

Monroe converted at a far better rate at 69.6 percent. The Cheesemakers also hit them when they counted Saturday. In the fourth quarter Monroe was 10-12 from the line. “We need to hit our free throws down the stretch. We missed a lot of free throws,” Kammerer said.

Cardinals senior point guard Jacob Cole had a team high 11 points in the game, while junior Michael Peterson had nine points. Junior Nick Jacobson added two points and junior Alex Wallace had one point in the game.

Cardinals six-foot-nine junior standout J.J. Panoske, had a frustrating evening, finishing with seven points. Panoske, only days removed from dropping 25 points on Belleville in Brodhead’s season opening win Tuesday, hit just two field goals in the game Saturday. He hit one early in the second quarter and one in the fourth quarter, after being fed the ball on almost every possession down the stretch.

“Tonight was an off night for him,” his coach said after the game. “He’s a kid that is going to re-group.” Meanwhile Panoske’s match-up on the other side of the ball, senior center Kevin Frint, led the way for the Cheesemakers. Frint scored a game high 14 points.

Junior forward Bryan Tordoff added 13 points and three other Cheesemakers contributed two points a piece. The Cardinals will try to rebound Thursday as they host Clinton (1-1).

Brodhead defeats Belleville to open boys season

With their eyes fixed on the ball, the Cardinals play defense against Belleville.

The Brodhead boys basketball team began their 2009-2010 season with a win over Belleville at home last Tuesday night. The Cardinals jumped out to a 16-7 lead after one quarter on their way to 58-47 win.

J.J. Panoske, a 6-9 junior, scored nine points in the first period on the way to a game-high 25 points. Michael Peterson added four points in the period.

In the second period Belleville was again limited to just seven points while the home team scored 12 to take a 28-14 advantage into the locker room.

Panoske and Jacob Cole hit on three-pointers during the period and Brandon McKee chipped in with four points. The Cardinals featured balanced scoring in the third stanza. Panoske scored four points, Cole and McKee two each and Jacobson one. Belleville scored 12 points in the period to cut the margin by two to 38-26 after three periods.

The visitors were forced to foul in the last period to try to get back in the game. However, the Cardinals hit most of their foul shots, converting 13 of 18 in the period. Panoske was perfect hitting six of six during that stretch. He finished the game nine of nine from the charity stripe. Alex Wallace was two-for-two in the fourth quarter and Cole was also two for two. In all, Brodhead hit 21 of 29 foul shots on the night.

In addition to Panoske’s 25 points, Cole had 11 and Peterson nine for the Cardinals. McKee scored six points, Alex Wallace had four, Jacobson two and Carson Scheidegger scored one point.
